Scrum Fables: The Red Flag

Sometimes the fastest route isn’t the best one.

The snake organised a team-building exercise.

Two teams—one from Dunwell, one from Yolotown—were dropped in the middle of a forest, beside a tall red flag.

Their goal: navigate to the green flag near the edge of the forest.

In the Yolotown team, the rooster crouched dramatically.

“Sloth, on my back!” he shouted.

Without waiting, he sprinted into the trees in a straight line, yelling, “It’s this way!”

The others scurried behind, trying to keep up.

The Dunwell team ambled in more slowly. The snail and turtle lagged behind, but every ten minutes they regrouped while the lion checked the map.

“Ah,” said the lion. “It’s this way.”
And off they trotted.

In the Yolotown team, the rooster occasionally stopped to catch his breath.
As the others came into view, he’d charge ahead again.
“Come on!” he shouted. “We’re going to win!”

“Sorry, guys,” said the snail. “I should’ve brought my rollerskates.”

“It’s okay,” said the lion. “We’re about thirty minutes from the green flag.”

The turtle looked up.
“I hope the others wait for us.”

The rooster was nearly out of breath.
But then—he spotted a flag in the distance.

“Nearly there!” he cried. “We’re going to win!”

He galloped toward it, the sloth clinging to his back, leaves flying behind them.

They reached the flag.

The rooster collapsed, panting, triumphant.

The sloth slid off, looked up at the flag, and said:

“It’s red.”

A whimsical watercolour of a determined red rooster running through a forest path with a smiling sloth riding on its back. The rooster is sweating and focused; the sloth looks relaxed and happy.
The rooster was on a mission. The sloth was on a joyride.
